There never was a nothing. First there was God, then there was a something.
Since the effect cannot be greater than the cause, the some-thing is less than the God thing. Because it is second and therefore less, and since comprehension is just a form of circumscription. logically the second thing cannot comprehend the first thing, Ontological rank is just sequence of creation, and is the limit on knowing.
We are an untangle-able union of matter and spirit. Our immaterial life, which infuses us, must necessarily be older than our material self, and so this material side is, for us, knowable. Because we are, in our holistic self, ontologically higher. And this knowing of matter we’ve come to call science.
But you cannot fully comprehend another human, since we persons are all ontologically equals. The knower who is equal in rank cannot circumscribe his equal by intellect, so he cannot know another in the sense we know matter. Persons, as persons, do not yield to the scientific method.
God is not comprehensible to smaller intelligences who are effects of Him as their cause. Not because He withholds Himself in active secrecy, but because we are not capable of knowing Him except as He makes Himself knowable as an active act of revelation.
